When you purchase legendary crests, remember that you're not purchasing a roll of the dice, like the case with Diablo IV Gold the FIFA Ultimate Team card pack, say. You are purchasing a chance to load the dice, to get into the game engine and modify the drop rate (slightly) in your favor. These addictive gaming mechanics are not separate from the addictive gameplay mechanics. They are instead tied directly into combat and loot drops in the game. Diablo is scarily well-positioned to make this happen. As my friend Maddy Myers pointed out, these games heavily focused on loot always had a certain slot-machine-like quality that Diablo Immortal's business model renders literal.
Blizzard has been at pains to emphasize that the game's monetization system can be ignored until the game's end that is the case, and they claim that the vast majority of players are enjoying the game without spending a dime, which is feasible. But it's disingenuous to suggest that the most enjoyable part of Diablo games is in the experience of engaging in the story instead of trying to max out your character. It's just as deceitful to suggest that these games have been designed to instill an urge to hit the power level of their players. For those who have a tendency toward addiction to gambling, toward the addictive characteristics of Diablo's Item gameand, perhaps and both of them -- the legendary crest system is inflicting a lot of harm and is potentially extremely destructive.
For all other players, it simply makes Diablo less fun.
There was a time when we were here or somewhere similar. When Diablo 3 came out in 2012, it included an auction house in real money that players could purchase and sell their drop items. The theory behind it was to stop the fraud and cheating that plagued item trading on Diablo 2. However, in order to direct players towards this auction-house, Blizzard decreased the rate at which loot drops were made in the game to an amount that the ability to equip your character was a tedious task and the game in general was boring to play. After the auction house, which was not well-liked, was taken down and drop rates were raised in 2014, buy cheap Diablo IV Gold instantly became more entertaining, even before advancements of the Reaper of Souls expansion lifted the game to a classic level. |
